You must be able to obtain a clearance if the position requires one. FCI will ask you a number of preliminary questions during the interview process to see if there are any factors in your background that may preclude you from being granted an interim DoD security clearance. You must answer each of these questions promptly and in their entirety. Failure to do so will prevent us from being able to complete our selection process. Once you’ve received an official offer of employment, it will be contingent upon you being granted a final DoD security clearance. You cannot begin work in a classified area or on classified materials until your interim clearance is granted. In the event the Defense Security Service (DSS) declines to grant you a final security clearance, your offer of employment would immediately become null and void. 4.If I don’t have a clearance, how long does it take to get one?
Being granted a DoD security clearance, is contingent on the applicant completing an online investigation application and receiving approval. Depending on the clearance level required this application covers the past seven to 10 years of your life to include employment, residence history, education, family, criminal, and financial issues. This application takes about one to two hours to complete and submit once you have collected all of your information. After you submit your application online and the FCI security department reviews it for errors, it is submitted to the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) for review. 5. The position I’m interested in requires a different clearance then what I currently have. What will this mean if I am hired?
If the position requires a higher clearance than what you presently have, FCI can pursue an “upgrade” for you. Depending on the position, the physical work space location, and the job duties you will perform, you may be able to start working for FCI while you wait for your clearance to be “upgraded”, but in some positions this may not be possible and you’d have to wait for the upgrade to be granted before beginning your employment with FCI. If the position requires a lower clearance than what you currently have, FCI would have to “downgrade” your clearance. This does not appear as any kind of adverse action in your security record, but rather it keeps your level of clearance in line with the type of materials you will have access to and the type of duties you will perform.
